3. Networking and Grant Writing workshop for ECR Political Theorists hosted at QMUL – 12th October 2024
Luke Lavender (QMUL) and Peter Marshall (based at Kent), are organising a networking and grant writing workshop for ECR political theorists at QMUL this term (exact room location TBD) with the kind support of the PSA’s Political Thought Specialist Group. See Eventbrite here, but the event will be held on Saturday the 12th of October from 11am-4pm. The morning session will feature an introductory talk on the importance of theory in political science by QMUL’s very own Dr. Joe Hoover, followed by a networking session; then in the afternoon we will have a roundtable and Q&A session (about making theory speak to grant writing) featuring Prof. Kim Hutchings (QMUL), Prof. James Martin (Goldsmiths), Prof. Nathan Widder (RHUL), and Dr. Udit Batia (York), followed by a more dedicated discussion session where our prospective speakers peel of and collaborate with attended about works-in-progress/prospective grant applications. The event will close with a drinks reception kindly sponsored by QMUL’s TheoryLab.
In short, if you (or anyone you know) are primarily theory orientated and would benefit from a more dedicated engagement of how to make theory speak to/for grant purposes please do sign up/pass along this invite to relevant interlocutors – it looks to be a good day of talks and a unique opportunity to get some close discussion with senior colleagues and chances to network with like-minded peers. We should also have some limited funds to cover non-London attendees in terms of transportation cost (note, if you would like to apply for this funding. We will select eligible ECRs by the 15th of September).
4.‘After Poststructuralism?’ Workshop Invitation
Workshop Overview: Poststructuralist theory entered the field of international relations (IR) during the 1980s and has been heralded as an ascendant approach within the discipline since. The workshop will interrogate how poststructuralism has navigated, shaped and challenged the discipline of IR, both within and without their porous boundaries. We invite scholars at all stages of their careers to join us to discuss what happens to IR ‘After Poststructuralism’.
Workshop Objectives:
- Examine the historical emergence, evolution, diffusion, and dissolution of poststructuralism within the discipline.
- Critically analyse poststructuralist methods and how they respond to the empirical demands of global politics.
- Explore approaches to teaching poststructuralism and ask whether a single label is appropriate for such a diverse intellectual tradition.
- Assess whether the questions posed by poststructuralists have been more fully answered by those working in other epistemic subcultures.
Workshop Requirements:
If you are willing to participate, please let us know by September 27th, 2024. We are asking participants to send us an abstract by the end of the week following this. These abstracts will allow us to organise speakers into panels. Participants will be asked to speak for 10 minutes, based on their abstract. We are hoping to put together a special issue proposal – if you would like your abstract to potentially be included in this, please let us know when sending the abstract. Those participating in the special issue will be asked to send full drafts of their papers (8000-10,000 words) by 31st January 2025.
Date: November 14th – 15th 2024.
Location: King’s College London
Duration: 2 days
Please let us know if you have any questions or would be interested in participating. As we may have some extra funding to help with travel, please indicate if you would like to access this when sending your abstract. Lunches, workshop dinner, and refreshments will be provided throughout.

Adults 2024 conference 26th SeptemberJoin us at the National Safeguarding Adults 2024 conference which is an essential meeting that brings together professionals from various sectors to discuss and address important issues related to safeguarding adults at risk of harm. This conference aims to raise awareness, share best practices, and collaborate on strategies to protect adults at risk of abuse or neglect. Information from the Safeguarding Adults Collection in England between April 2022 and March 2023 revealed that approximately 587,965 concerns of abuse against adults had been raised, which was an increase of nine per cent on the previous year. Approximately 2.6 million people over the age of 65 are victims of abuse each year in the UK but it is likely this figure is not a true reflection due to under reporting. This conference will seek to promote a culture of protection and support for those at risk through a series of keynote speeches, delivered by renowned safeguarding experts, panel discussions, and networking opportunities. The agenda will focus on current challenges and trends, provide practical tools and strategies for safeguarding adults, and contribute to enhanced skills and practice. If you have a safeguarding responsibility and wish to gain new insights and knowledge, learn from experts in the field, engage in meaningful conversations to improve safeguarding practices nationally, and build connections with like-minded professionals For more information including how to register click: here |

12. LISS DTP Achievements!
PhD researcher Matti Spåra participated in the European International Studies Association Pan-European Conference in Lille. Matti co-chaired Section 29, titled “What’s the Role of the IR Theorist in Public Debate Today?” and presented his PhD research on different “intellectual personae.” He emphasised the need to reconsider the norms of IR theory scholarship, discussing the importance of re-establishing public engagement as a core epistemic virtue in the theorisation of international relations and proposing concrete strategies to achieve this.
With the help of funding from LISS DTP, Sophie Perry (LISS funded) alongside Shirin Hine and Melissa Glackin recently celebrated two co-edited book chapter collections that feature the work of KCL Education, Communication and Society’s students, staff and alumni. The books capture personal reflections related to environmental education, interweaving literatures with heart-felt responses to the poly-crisis.
More information about the event is here and the books can be downloaded for free here. A seminar event will be hosted by CRESTEM in October 2024.
Well done Matti and Sophie!
