Our Research Culture Statement
The London Interdisciplinary Social Science Doctoral Training Partnership (LISS-DTP) fosters a research culture grounded in equality, diversity, and inclusion, where researchers from all backgrounds are supported to thrive in a collaborative and respectful community.
Central to this vision is a commitment to research integrity and ethical practice, ensuring all work is rigorous, responsible, and transparent. LISS-DTP promotes interdisciplinary, data-driven research across and beyond the social sciences, particularly at the intersections with health, science, engineering, and the humanities, supporting projects with meaningful societal and economic impact.
Researchers benefit from practical research experiences, mentoring, professional networking, alumni engagement, and student-led initiatives that promote wellbeing and community, equipping them to produce innovative, ethically grounded, and impactful research while developing personally and professionally.
Our Work in this Area
LISS DTP Studentships
As part of our goal to recruit outstanding and diverse candidates, we currently offer ringfenced studentships (9 for 2026/27 entry) for Home Students from underrepresented backgrounds; disabled students; students with caring responsibilities (sole or primary caregivers for a child or children under the age of 18; with primary caring responsibilities for an adult family member (including a spouse, sibling, or parent)
LISS DTP Training
Along with institutional provision of ED&I training, the LISS DTP provides the following courses:
- Diversity Matters Workshop (hosted by Challenge EDI) which is mandatory for all LISS DTP Students to attend.
- LISS2003N Equality, Diversity and Inclusion in Research
- LISS2101 Decolonising the Researcher
LISS DTP Supervisors
Supervisors play a key role, where they are expected to:
- Promote a respectful, inclusive, and supportive research environment within supervision teams by involving colleagues of different backgrounds and career stages.
- Recognise and value the diversity of backgrounds, skills, experiences, training, and career pathways among students and colleagues.
- Engage with institutional training on supporting students with disabilities and on inclusive supervision practices.
- Ensure students are aware of opportunities to contribute to and benefit from ED&I initiatives and training during their doctoral study and placements.
LISS DTP Student Representation
LISS DTP encourages all students to engage actively in its representation structures and ED&I initiatives. Within each Research Area, student representatives are elected to serve on the Student-Staff Liaison Committee (SSLC).
This committee acts as a formal communication channel between students and staff, providing space to share feedback and reflect on the student experience. It is a collaborative forum for supporting and enhancing:
- Student wellbeing
- Research practice
- Cohort development
- Implementation of ED&I initiatives
LISS DTP Student Pulse Survey
The LISS DTP Student Pulse Survey is sent on a termly basis and designed to check on our LISS Students’ wellbeing, academic experience, and sense of connection within the LISS DTP community.
This helps us to understanding what’s working, where improvements can be made and how we can better support our LISS Students. As part of our commitment to supporting their doctoral journeys, their feedback is invaluable help in shaping a more responsive and inclusive Doctoral Training Partnership.
LISS DTP Parents and Carers Group
The Parents and Carers group is a student-led support hub that support students with parental and/or caring responsibilities through a range of events, including a monthly online Teams call and dicussion sessions. It has allowed students to connect with one another during their doctoral journey.
Here is a member testimonial:
“I have experienced understanding, care, and empathy, and this has given me the resilience to manage work-life challenges with confidence and be productive during my PhD journey.”
The LISS DTP seeks to build a welcoming research culture in which all voices are heard, and all members of the community can thrive.
