Research in Practice

Research in practice is a core component of doctoral experience for all our students. We are keen to work with non-academic partners to offer practical opportunities to our PhD students. If your organisation is interested in working with LISS DTP please contact liss-dtp@kcl.ac.uk

What our partners say

‘In the three months that [the student] was in the Climate Change and Health team at the UK Health Security Agency, she developed a research project that fit in with her expertise and was an area of work that the team has wanted to investigate for some time but has had limited resources to do so.’

 – Dr Emma Gillingham, Climate Change and Health Group (UKHSA)

‘We have been delighted to offer an internship…at our department as part of the LISS-DTP programme over the past funding period, which yielded a greater understanding of the operationalisations of momentary resilience EMA measures and their validity in the context of our departmental research programme. The findings from this work have already been written up and will result in a publication led by [the intern] at the cutting-edge of current conceptualizations and operationalizations of resilience in mental health research.’

– Dr Ulrich Reininghaus Central Institute of Mental Health, University of Heidelberg, Germany.

Impact

Through this scheme, students receive transferrable skills training from LISS DTP and are enabled to co-design research with non-academic stakeholders and gain invaluable cross-sectoral experience.

What our students say

‘Working on a short-term project gives you experience in the research dissemination process, which you would otherwise only get the chance to do in the latter portion of your PhD. This encourages you to think about how you want your own research to be shared and what sort of impact you want to have.’

 – F. Curry, King’s College London, School of Global Affairs

‘I appreciated the flexibility of LISS DTP to enable me to undertake the internship in a hybrid fashion… I wrote an article for the Sentio Journal, which was recently published, and I don’t think this would have been written if I had not done this internship.’

– M. Wilson, King’s College London, Centre for Society and Mental Health
