Impact

Research undertaken by LISS DTP students has a wide impact.

Students have opportunities to share their passion for their subject with others, as well as providing a valuable opportunity to raise public awareness about the research taking place both within the LISS DTP and further afield. The LISS DTP actively promotes and supports engagement with the wider community and works closely with organisations to provide opportunities for our students to develop activities.

LISS aims for students to develop the competences to engage with extensive networks of non-academic collaborators, and co-design research and training with users, practitioners, and potential future employers.

The Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) defines research impact as the demonstrable contribution that excellent research makes to society and the economy. They have an impact toolkit that can help to define, identify and communicate impact: https://www.ukri.org/councils/esrc/impact-toolkit-for-economic-and-social-sciences/  Given the wide diversity of research covered by the LISS DTP, there is no unique model for generating impact.

What our students say

‘Working on a short-term project gives you experience in the research dissemination process, which you would otherwise only get the chance to do in the latter portion of your PhD. This encourages you to think about how you want your own research to be shared and what sort of impact you want to have.’

F. Curry

King’s College London, School of Global Affairs

‘I appreciated the flexibility of LISS DTP to enable me to undertake the internship in a hybrid fashion… I wrote an article for the Sentio Journal, which was recently published, and I don’t think this would have been written if I had not done this internship.’
