2. Black History Month Across the Institutions
Black History Month at King’s
The theme of Black History Month 2024 is ‘Reclaiming Narratives,’ and events are taking place throughout the month, and across the institution (and London) to “celebrate Black history and culture, and recognise and correct inaccurate narratives.” A selected list of events is available on the King’s website; all events are open to both King’s students and staff, and external attendees.
QMUL
Black History Month is an annual celebration that highlights the contributions, successes, and achievements of the Black community across the world. This year’s theme, Reclaiming Narratives, offers an important opportunity to reflect on the history, stories, and achievements of Black people, both in our society and here at Queen Mary. We are proud to showcase our biggest celebration to date, with an exciting programme of activities, events, and resources

In celebration of Black History Month, CIVENG welcomes all staff and students to join us for our lecture “Designing a Better World” which will explore how architecture can be a powerful tool for social change.
Designing a Better World, Ali Mangera, MEng Dip Arch RIBA -Yvars Architects
Wednesday 30th October, 13.00 – 14.00
Skempton Building, Room 427
Abstract
The greatest Russian writer of all time, Alexander Sergeyevich Pushkin, had black ancestry. Pushkin acknowledged his ancestry, enabling him to look at the world with greater objectivity, simultaneously attached and detached – remote yet distant.
Observing the world through a different lens as both an insider and outsider is deeply rooted within the MYAA process. Architecture can empower communities as much as it can malign and disenfranchise them. Through a careful and considered approach, MYAA seeks to harness the power and possibilities architecture has to offer. In doing so, we address many topical issues of our day: identity, translocation, environment and collective engagement.

3. ASSESSING THE WORLD HEALTH ORGANIZATION’S PANDEMIC TREATY
A Queen Mary Special Event with Dr Clare Wenham and Dr Mark Eccleston-Turner
In the wake of COVID-19’s devastating worldwide impacts, the international community has set out to reform our international systems of global health emergency response and pandemic preparedness. However, WHO-led efforts to negotiate a new international treaty on pandemics have stalled in the wake of major disagreements between global south and north countries on pathogen data sharing, the fair distribution of essential countermeasures like vaccines, and the meaning of basic notions like equity and solidarity.
Our expert guest speakers will update us on the negotiation process and guide us through the main political challenges ahead.
- Speakers: Dr. Clare Wenham (LSE) and Dr. Mark Eccleston-Turner (King’s College London)
- When: Wednesday October 16, 3:00 PM – 5:00 PM
- Where: Perrin Lecture Theatre, Blizard Building, 4 Newark St., E1 2AT.
More information can be found on the event webpage.
